NYC Kitten Rescue Defends Adoption Policy Amid PETA Criticism

<p>A New York City kitten rescue, Itty Bitty City Kitties, is defending its adoption policy after posting a warning that MAGA supporters, conservatives, and apolitical applicants need not apply. The organization has faced criticism, including from PETA, which has called for the policy to be abolished.</p><p>PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk stated, "Homeless animals don’t care which side of abortion you are on or whether you believe in global warming or support Palestine or Israel or if you don’t vote at all, ever. They care if you love them and will give them a good home." Newkirk expressed hope that the rescue would reconsider its policy.</p><p>Itty Bitty City Kitties, based in Rockaway Beach, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on orphaned and neonatal kittens, feral cat welfare, and adoptions. In a social media post, the rescue outlined political positions that could disqualify potential adopters, stating, "MAGA? Nope. Conservative? Nope. ‘I’m not political’? Nice loophole. Still nope." An image accompanying the post featured the message, "NO. F---ING. MAGA."</p><p>The post gained attention after being shared by Libs of TikTok, raising questions about the rescue's actual adoption practices. Samantha Knox, the director of Itty Bitty City Kitties, defended the organization's screening process, emphasizing the welfare of the animals. Knox stated, "As an animal welfare rescue, our primary responsibility is ensuring the animals in our care go to safe, compassionate homes." She noted that the organization considers "public conduct and demonstrated values" when evaluating applicants.</p><p>Knox explained that a history of celebrating harm or abuse is a significant concern in animal rescue. She clarified that the organization does not screen applicants based on political party affiliation, stating, "MAGA is a political movement and ideology, not a recognized political party." Instead, evaluations focus on conduct, ethical alignment, and animal safety.</p><p>When asked if a MAGA or conservative applicant without a history of cruelty could adopt, Knox did not provide a direct answer. She remarked, "Media-driven requests to force complex animal welfare evaluations into a binary ‘yes or no’ premise fundamentally misrepresent how responsible adoption screenings operate." Knox added that support for social movements that promote cruelty could be considered actionable conduct.</p><p>PETA responded by stating that political affiliation is not a reliable measure of someone's suitability as a guardian. The organization emphasized that rescues should focus on objective animal welfare factors, including an applicant’s history of animal care and evidence of cruelty or neglect.</p><p>Itty Bitty City Kitties’ adoption page outlines a "Fully Supported Adoption Model," requiring prospective owners to submit an application, references, and participate in interviews. The organization's requirements do not mention political affiliation.</p><p>The rescue has also used its social media for political messaging, including a post that stated, "Kittens. Don’t. Mourn. Nazis," which was published on the anniversary of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination.</p><p>Knox defended the organization's right to take political positions, noting that 501(c)(3) organizations can maintain issue-based standards aligned with their missions. PETA reiterated that an applicant’s behavior toward animals should be the primary consideration in adoption decisions.</p>
