<p class="wp-block-paragraph">President Donald Trump winced during a military flyover as he greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday evening.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan, to Washington for a three-day state visit that includes a military review, state dinner, and multiple meetings. The president rolled out the red carpet for Xi as he disembarked from the plane, a process that was briefly delayed as workers smoothed the carpet while Chinese officials observed from the plane, followed by a ceremony at the Air Force base.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The greeting included music from the Air Force band, the playing of the American and Chinese national anthems, ceremonial cannon fire, and a flyover by two B-1 bombers.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the flyover, Trump, 80, flinched as the loud jets flew overhead. Xi, 73, appeared unaffected by the ceremony.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two leaders then spoke for several minutes before departing separately for Washington, D.C., where they are scheduled to reunite on Thursday.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The president will host Xi on Thursday for another arrival ceremony, followed by a state dinner in the evening that is expected to include several Big Tech executives.</p>
