Israeli Bulldozers Uproot Olive Groves in West Bank Ahead of Harvest

Israeli bulldozers have uprooted olive groves near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank just weeks before the annual harvest. Residents reported that the Israeli army bulldozers destroyed rows of olive trees in the village of Deir Nidham, with the demolition starting on Monday and continuing on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Palestinian farmer Abd Alfattah Tamimi stated that the army had destroyed olive trees on his family’s land and that of his neighbors. Another farmer, Nather Tamimi, indicated that the timing of the demolition was intended to cause maximum damage ahead of the harvest season, which traditionally begins in October. He noted that his family produces approximately 120 drums of olive oil from their land each year. Nather Tamimi also mentioned that the Israeli army uprooted various types of trees, including those located between houses. The Israeli military stated it was reviewing a request for comment from Reuters but had not responded by Wednesday evening. Historically, Israel has justified the clearing of olive trees by citing security concerns. However, Palestinian human rights groups argue that such actions deprive farmers of income and uproot trees that symbolize their connection to the land. The Palestinian Authority’s Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission reported that Israeli actions in August affected 21,508 trees, including 19,375 olive trees. They estimated this year’s olive production at 21,000 tonnes, exceeding the local demand of about 15,000 tonnes.
