Zelensky Discusses U.S. Push for Energy Ceasefire and Trilateral Talks with Russia

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with Axios on Wednesday that the Trump administration is advocating for three immediate actions to de-escalate the war in Ukraine and resume diplomatic relations with Russia:</p><ul><li>A ceasefire on energy infrastructure.</li><li>Reopening the Black Sea grain corridor.</li><li>A trilateral meeting involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, potentially in Abu Dhabi.</li></ul><p>Zelensky noted that President Trump is focused on reviving diplomatic efforts to end the war, with an immediate goal of halting Ukrainian attacks on Russian diesel fuel, which have affected prices in the U.S. and globally.</p><hr /><ul><li>Despite several days of discussions during the UN General Assembly in New York, an energy ceasefire appears difficult to achieve, and it remains uncertain whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is interested in such an agreement.</li><li>Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy for Putin, is scheduled to meet with Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in New York to discuss the latest U.S. proposals.</li></ul><p>Zelensky mentioned that he spoke with Trump on Tuesday regarding efforts to end the conflict and the potential for an energy ceasefire.</p><ul><li>Following this, Witkoff and Kushner met with Ukraine's negotiation team and the national security advisers from France, the UK, and Germany.</li><li>Zelensky indicated that the U.S. proposed a mutual halt to strikes on energy infrastructure and that Ukraine is prepared to agree to this.</li><li>"On the table now there is a proposition: energy ceasefire. We are ready," he stated.</li><li>Additionally, he mentioned that the U.S. is looking to reopen the grain corridor and arrange a trilateral meeting between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia.</li></ul><p>The last trilateral meeting involving the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia occurred in February before the conflict with Iran escalated. Since then, negotiations have stalled.</p><ul><li>Zelensky expressed a preference for a trilateral meeting, with an energy ceasefire being one of its initial outcomes.</li><li>The U.S. suggested that a technical team meeting could occur before a leaders' meeting, with Abu Dhabi proposed as a potential location.</li><li>"We are open — any country, any format," he remarked.</li><li>Zelensky also noted that the G20 summit in Miami in December could serve as an opportunity for a leader-level trilateral summit.</li><li>Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that Trump invited Putin to attend the summit following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.</li><li>Zelensky emphasized that simply bringing the three parties together would be a significant step toward de-escalation.</li></ul><p>The renewed push for negotiations began three weeks ago when CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow.</p><ul><li>This was followed by Witkoff and Kushner's visits to Moscow and Kyiv, where they met with Putin and Zelensky, respectively.</li><li>After their return, Trump had a lengthy phone call with Putin.</li></ul><p>Zelensky noted that Witkoff and Kushner were optimistic after their discussions with Putin.</p><ul><li>"They said, 'We think that Putin is ready.' I said, 'Look, I'm not sure,'" Zelensky recalled.</li><li>The U.S. envoys responded, "No, we are close."</li><li>Zelensky expressed his readiness to discuss an energy ceasefire and other de-escalation measures but remained doubtful about Putin's commitment.</li></ul><p>Despite his skepticism regarding Putin's intentions, Zelensky stated that he believes the Russian leader might find reasons to avoid a trilateral meeting with leaders present.</p><ul><li>On Wednesday, the Kremlin indicated that conditions are not favorable for resuming peace talks with Ukraine and that high-level meetings are not currently anticipated.</li><li>Minutes before Zelensky's interview with Axios, Russia launched multiple ballistic missiles toward Kyiv, prompting Zelensky to receive updates on the missile attacks during the discussion.</li></ul><p>Zelensky described Trump's response to the diplomatic initiative as "very positive" during their meeting.</p><ul><li>Trump reportedly told him, "We will try," to which Zelensky replied, "Great, and really wish you not only to try [but] to succeed."</li><li>Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv seeks progress before winter, irrespective of the U.S. political timeline.</li></ul><p>U.S. officials have indicated that reducing attacks on energy infrastructure is crucial due to its impact on energy prices.</p><ul><li>Zelensky mentioned that he has been in discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and officials from India, the UAE, and Egypt regarding the ceasefire and reopening the grain corridor.</li><li>These countries are also engaging with Russia, he noted.</li><li>"Everybody wants [a] ceasefire. The corridor has to work again. We support [it]. They speak with Russians, I know. We will see," Zelensky stated.</li></ul><p>Zelensky concluded that Witkoff, Kushner, and his team held follow-up discussions after his meeting with Trump and agreed to continue working on the proposals and communicate with Moscow.</p><ul><li>Ukrainian officials indicated that some elements still need development over the next two weeks before the Americans present them to the Russians.</li><li>Zelensky anticipates that Trump will prioritize securing the energy ceasefire.</li></ul>
