Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL) discovered a pocketknife concealed inside a tube of toothpaste during a routine carry-on screening. TSA Officer Jazmine Kramer noticed a metal object near the toiletries while screening the bag with an X-ray machine and flagged it for further inspection.
Kramer stated, "Usually when people have prohibited items in their bags, it’s by accident. It’s not normally because they intentionally put something there thinking it will make it through."
Security training instructor Wade Brown searched the toiletry bag but initially could not locate the object seen on the X-ray. He rescreened the belongings and identified the toothpaste tube, which felt unusual and had tape near one end. A closer inspection revealed the hidden pocketknife.
The couple who owned the bag informed officers that their son had suggested concealing the knife in the toothpaste tube to bypass airport security. Brown expressed surprise at this method, noting it was the first time he had encountered someone intentionally hiding an item in such a manner at DAL. The couple voluntarily surrendered the pocketknife and were allowed to continue to their flight.
Brown emphasized the importance of communication among officers when an item detected on an X-ray cannot be immediately found during a hands-on search. TSA Dallas Love Field Federal Security Director Amy Williams commented that unexpected discoveries during screenings are part of the job.
In a related incident, TSA officers at Tampa International Airport found a 4-inch double-edged knife concealed inside a baseball bat-shaped flashlight in a passenger's carry-on bag. The passenger initially claimed ignorance of the item but later admitted to placing it beneath the suitcase lining to save space, resulting in his arrest and prohibition from traveling.
