Authenticity and Modernity Party Leads in Morocco Election Provisional Results

The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has secured 97 out of 395 seats in Morocco's parliamentary elections, according to provisional results announced by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit on Thursday. This result marks PAM's rise above its senior coalition partner, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), which obtained 66 seats, while the Istiqlal Party gained 65 seats. The Justice and Development Party (PJD), which won 13 seats in the previous election in 2021, increased its representation to 54 seats this time. Voter turnout was reported at 38.02 percent, a decrease from 50 percent in 2021. Under the 2011 constitution, King Mohammed VI is responsible for appointing the prime minister from the largest party, positioning PAM to potentially lead the next government. This election follows protests led by Gen Z activists last year, and the new government will face challenges related to jobs, wages, and living costs. Additionally, it will manage significant investments as Morocco prepares to cohost the 2030 World Cup. Since no party is expected to achieve an absolute majority, coalition-building will be necessary. PAM leaders have indicated they will not partner again with the RNI, citing previous policy failures. PAM's campaign focused on a $37 billion platform aimed at creating 1 million jobs, improving wages, and enhancing healthcare and social protection. Potential candidates for prime minister include PAM’s Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, who could become the second female head of government in the Arab region, and Fouzi Lekjaa, the budget minister who joined PAM shortly before the election.
