NYC Kitten Rescue Defends Adoption Policy Amid Criticism from PETA

A New York City kitten rescue, Itty Bitty City Kitties, is defending its adoption policy that excludes supporters of the MAGA movement, conservatives, and apolitical applicants. The organization, based in Rockaway Beach, has faced criticism from PETA, which has called for the policy to be abolished. PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk stated, "Homeless animals don’t care which side of abortion you are on or whether you believe in global warming or support Palestine or Israel or if you don’t vote at all, ever. They care if you love them and will give them a good home." The rescue's social media post included a message stating, "NO. F–KING. MAGA," which drew attention after being shared on X by Libs of TikTok. Samantha Knox, the director of Itty Bitty City Kitties, defended the screening process, emphasizing that the welfare of the animals is the primary concern. Knox stated, "As an animal welfare rescue, our primary responsibility is ensuring the animals in our care go to safe, compassionate homes." She explained that the organization evaluates applicants based on their conduct and ethical alignment rather than their political affiliation. Knox clarified that the organization does not reject applicants solely based on political party affiliation but considers actions and public statements that may indicate a failure to meet safety and welfare standards. PETA responded by stating that political affiliation should not be a measure of an applicant's suitability as a guardian, advocating for a focus on objective animal welfare factors. The rescue's adoption process includes a comprehensive evaluation of prospective owners, which does not mention political ideology. Itty Bitty City Kitties has also used its social media for political messaging, including a post referencing the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Knox noted that as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization is allowed to maintain issue-based standards aligned with its mission. PETA reiterated that an applicant's behavior toward animals should be the primary consideration in adoption decisions.
