Texas delivery driver Don Johnson, 81, works long hours to cover wife's medical bills as community raises nearly $250K

An 81-year-old man from Texas, Don Johnson, has gained attention after being filmed struggling to carry heavy bags as part of his job to pay for his wife's medical bills while she battles cancer. The footage, captured by a home security camera, shows Johnson delivering luggage to Erin Howell, a Dallas-Fort Worth area resident, who later shared the video on GoFundMe. Howell described Johnson's efforts as heartbreaking, noting that he is working not by choice but for survival. Johnson has been working as an independent contractor delivering luggage for three years since his wife, Josephine, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The couple, married for 57 years, moved in with their daughter to help manage the challenges posed by the illness. Johnson stated that he needed to work to cope with rising medical bills and prescription costs. He mentioned that he has worked 14-hour days, driving hundreds of miles daily, which has led to significant mechanical issues with his vehicle. Howell initiated a crowdfunding campaign for Johnson, which has raised over $244,000 of its $300,000 goal since its launch on September 2. Johnson expressed gratitude for the support, stating that he hopes to stop working soon. Josephine shared that the donations and messages have given her hope in her battle against cancer.
