Knife Attack at Polish Abbey Results in One Death and Four Injuries

A 31-year-old Ukrainian national attacked clergy and worshippers at a Catholic monastery in Jaroslaw, Poland, resulting in one fatality and four injuries. The incident occurred on Thursday morning at the 17th-century Benedictine abbey, located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Ukrainian border. According to police, the suspect entered Poland from Germany earlier that day and seized a knife from the abbey’s kitchen before attacking five individuals, including a priest in a confessional. Prosecutor Bozena Harasz-Wołoszyn confirmed that three of the victims were clergy members and two were laypeople, with one victim deceased and two others in critical condition. Polish media reported that the deceased was a priest, although police have not confirmed his identity. Prosecutors noted that the attacker was initially headed for a border crossing back into Ukraine but diverted to the abbey. The motive for the attack is currently unclear, and medical evaluations will determine if the suspect was under the influence of alcohol. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the perpetrator would face severe legal consequences. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a horrific crime, emphasizing the need for justice.
