<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some Republican senators have expressed disapproval of President Donald Trump's invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit, which would mark Putin's first attendance since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD) stated, "I think that’s a mistake. I think he’s a pariah," referring to Putin's actions in Europe and the impact on Ukraine.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) also called the invitation a "mistake," citing concerns that it could lead the United States into further conflict regarding NATO obligations.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cornyn remarked, "I don’t know why we continue to coddle stone-cold killers like Putin. He’s a clear and present danger, not only to Ukraine, but to NATO itself, which could have disastrous consequences in terms of our responsibilities under Article 5."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senator Todd Young (R-IN), a military veteran, suggested that the invitation should only be valid if Putin is prepared to make significant concessions regarding the war in Ukraine. Young stated, "If it’s to announce that Putin has made some significant concessions as it relates to a war that he started and continues to sustain, then great. I think elevating Vladimir Putin is not where we should be focused right now."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The invitation was announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a press conference at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City. Rubio indicated that the invitation is an opportunity for Putin to engage with world leaders.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the U.N. event and has sought to mediate peace between Ukraine and Russia. Zelensky expressed hope that Trump would assist in ending the conflict before winter.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nikki Haley, a former GOP presidential candidate and U.N. ambassador, criticized the invitation, calling it "irresponsible." She stated on social media, "Putin attacked Ukraine. Putin has helped the Iranians in the war against the US. Putin continues to threaten our NATO allies. This is irresponsible."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite the criticism, Russia remains one of the world's largest economies, and Trump is reportedly considering offering economic incentives to resolve the conflict, following the signing of a new bipartisan sanctions measure by Congress.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, "I won’t question the president’s decision to do it. There might be a justification for it because [Russia] is [one of the] largest economies in the world."</p>
