Five senior military officials in Kazakhstan have been detained following the deaths of 14 service members during military exercises. The incident occurred on Thursday when 17 service members were swept into the Caspian Sea while disembarking from a boat. According to officials, the incident was attributed to a sharp deterioration in meteorological conditions and increasing winds during a combat training mission.
Those detained include the chief of staff and first deputy commander of Kazakhstan's Naval Forces, two military unit commanders, and the commanders of a marine company and a boat. They are suspected of criminal negligence.
An interior ministry committee has been established to investigate the incident, which took place approximately 43 kilometers (27 miles) from the city of Aktau in southwestern Kazakhstan. Deputy Interior Minister Sanzhar Adilov stated that a pretrial investigation into the deaths is underway.
The investigation will examine the decision-making processes during the organization and execution of the military training exercise, including whether safety requirements were followed, if weather conditions were considered, and the technical specifications of the boat involved.
The Caspian Defense 2026 military exercise involved more than 500 military personnel, warships, and coastal units, as reported by the Kazakh Ministry of Defence.
