Pittsburgh doctor identified attacker before fatal stabbing, court documents reveal

A Pennsylvania doctor, Idris Evans, was reportedly stabbed to death in bed after calling out the name of his alleged attacker, Elijah Hemingway, during the incident, according to a criminal complaint. Evans' wife witnessed the attack and stated that she did not know Hemingway, who is accused of breaking into their home and entering their third-floor bedroom. Hemingway claimed he was invited to the residence, where the couple's two children were sleeping, but authorities found no evidence to support this claim. Assistant Superintendent of the Allegheny County Police Department, Vic Joseph, noted that the investigation is ongoing to determine if there was any prior relationship between Evans and Hemingway. The attack occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, with Hemingway reportedly exhibiting erratic behavior and making statements about God. Both Evans and his wife sustained defensive wounds while attempting to fend off the attacker. Evans was pronounced dead at a local hospital, while his wife remains in critical condition. The couple's children, aged 8 and 12, escaped to a neighbor's home during the incident. Hemingway was later apprehended by police and faces multiple charges, including criminal homicide and aggravated assault. He had previously been released on nonmonetary bail following a prior arrest for burglary and theft. Evans was a pediatric critical care physician and co-Medical Director of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Pediatric Transport Team, as well as an Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. UPMC expressed condolences, stating that the community is deeply saddened by Evans' tragic loss.
