Poland Enhances Air Defense Following Alleged Airspace Violations

Poland has increased its air defense measures in response to alleged incursions into its airspace over recent weeks. The Polish Air Force initiated preventive air patrols on September 17 to secure the eastern region of Polish airspace. The Polish government has attributed these incursions to Russia, which has denied targeting NATO nations. Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on social media, "Following the latest Russian provocations and acts of aggression, I have made the decision to expand the protection of our airspace. We are increasing the activity of our air forces, including F-16 aircraft and helicopters." Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized the need for public awareness regarding potential serious events, citing intelligence reports suggesting that Russia may conduct hybrid drone and missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland. On September 23, Poland reported that an Mi-8 helicopter entered its airspace from Kaliningrad for a brief period. Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command remarked, "Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defense." The most significant claim of a violation involved a Russian Su-24 reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea in February 2025, which Russia acknowledged. In the past week, suspected Russian drones were reportedly shot down in Moldova and Romania. The recent alleged airspace violations have raised concerns about a potential Russian attack on NATO territory, a scenario European intelligence officials have warned about since January 2024. Czech intelligence chief Michal Koudelka indicated that a Russian attack could occur within months. Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defence reported on September 19 that its forces had captured 5,300 square kilometers (2,050 square miles) and over 220 settlements in Ukraine since the beginning of 2026. Russia has conducted drone strikes against Ukrainian cities consistently, resulting in casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Russia has used over 2,100 missiles against Ukraine this year. The Institute for the Study of War has assessed that Russian claims of territorial advances are exaggerated, estimating a net gain of only 147.7 square kilometers (57 square miles) in the first eight months of 2026. In contrast, Ukrainian forces have liberated at least 972.56 square kilometers (375 square miles) during the same period. Ukrainian operations near Oleksandrivka and Lyman have resulted in significant territorial gains. Additionally, the United Russia Party, led by President Vladimir Putin, secured a majority in the Duma elections, which officials interpreted as a support for Putin's policies regarding the war in Ukraine. Ukraine launched a significant airstrike on the final day of the Russian parliamentary elections, with reports of successful strikes on Russian refineries.
