The New York Islanders are facing a tight timeline for roster decisions as the preseason progresses. With only 13 days remaining until the start of the season, the team is preparing for its final preseason game on Saturday, which is expected to showcase a lineup similar to what will be seen on opening night. Friday's match against the New York Rangers was critical for several players vying for roster spots, particularly Isaiah George, who was initially favored to secure a position alongside Tony DeAngelo.
The competition for the sixth and seventh defense positions has been notably competitive during training camp. George's performance during the rookie and main camps has not met expectations, leading to speculation about his standing on the team. Head Coach Pete DeBoer indicated a preference for stability in the defensive lineup, suggesting that Scott Mayfield may be favored for a spot.
"I think you’re looking for stability," DeBoer stated. "Just like a young forward trying to make a team or a line, you want to gain the coach’s trust. The coach wants to feel good about putting those guys out there."
DeBoer emphasized the importance of being prepared for matchups, particularly with the team starting the season on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs. George's performance in the game against the Rangers, where the Islanders lost 6-1, did not bolster his case for inclusion in the lineup. He finished the game with a minus-1 rating and was noted for several defensive lapses.
Following the game, George commented on his performance, saying, "I don’t know if I’m playing tomorrow, but just try to put my best foot forward every day. I think I did a good job of that. I thought each day I got better and I was a good player out there. So at the end of the day, I did my best and whatever happens, happens."
Other players, including DeAngelo, Pierre Engvall, Kyle MacLean, and Mitchell Chaffee, participated in their second preseason game on Friday and are now ineligible to play in Saturday's match. As a result, the fourth line for the upcoming game is expected to include Anthony Duclair and Ondrej Palat alongside Casey Cizikas. Duclair, Emil Heineman, Ryan Pulock, and Alexander Romanov are anticipated to play both games in the back-to-back schedule.
