Atlanta detective accused of stealing beer from Publix using undercover vehicle

An off-duty detective from the Atlanta Police Department is accused of stealing a $19 case of beer from a Publix grocery store and using his undercover police vehicle to leave the scene. Ronald Sluss allegedly took a 12-pack of SweetWater IPA from the store in Canton on September 16, according to a report from WSBTV, which cited the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Sluss carrying the beer through the checkout area while holding what appeared to be a receipt. The store manager became suspicious when Sluss allegedly walked through the checkout without paying and followed him to the parking lot, where he took a photo of Sluss's vehicle. The manager called 911 without knowing he was reporting a police officer, and authorities later traced the vehicle back to the Atlanta Police Department, identifying Sluss as the suspect. He was arrested at his home, where deputies noted he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, and his undercover vehicle also smelled of alcohol. Customers at the supermarket expressed shock at the allegations against Sluss. The Atlanta Police Department stated that Sluss has been placed in a non-enforcement status while the office of professional standards investigates the incident, emphasizing that all allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and that officers are expected to uphold high standards.
