Rutgers achieves first win of the 2026 season against Howard

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Antwan Raymond ran for 140 yards and three touchdowns, leading Rutgers to a 58-7 victory over Howard on Friday night. The Scarlet Knights (1-3) scored on 10 of their 12 possessions, accumulating a total of 534 yards. Dylan Lonergan had a notable performance for Rutgers, passing for 214 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters against Howard, a Championship Subdivision team. Lonergan entered the game with five interceptions. KJ Duff, an AP pre-season second-team All-America wide receiver, caught five passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Howard (1-3) managed a total of 184 yards, with 75 of those yards coming from a touchdown run by Eden James, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Edgerrin James. James finished the game with 116 yards on seven carries. The victory marked coach Greg Schiano's 100th win at Rutgers, bringing his overall record to 100-111 over 18 years across two tenures with the Scarlet Knights. Schiano joins Kirk Ferentz (Iowa), Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Troy Calhoun (Air Force), and Kirby Smart (Georgia) as active Bowl Subdivision head coaches who have achieved 100 wins at their current institution. Howard has struggled against FBS schools, with their only win over an FBS opponent being against UNLV in 2017. Rutgers has outscored Howard 318-67 in their seven matchups. The Bison have been outscored 113-7 in their last two games against Indiana and Rutgers. Duff, who considered transferring out of Rutgers after a disappointing 5-7 season, has since become the 11th player in program history to reach 2,000 career receiving yards and the first in Rutgers’ history to catch a touchdown in five consecutive games. Rutgers will host defending champion Indiana on October 3.
