Flood Emergency Declared in Bangkok Following Heavy Rain

A flood emergency has been declared across Bangkok after 48 hours of heavy rain resulted in submerged roads in the Thai capital. Residents have been advised to remain at home, and those living near the city's canals have been instructed to move their belongings to higher floors. Thunderstorms are typical in Thailand during this season; however, recent extreme weather has overwhelmed Bangkok's drainage system, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The rain is predicted to persist into Sunday, raising concerns about potential further flooding. Canals in the city have overflowed, inundating roadways. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old resident near a canal north of central Bangkok, reported, "The water keeps coming in. It's hard to go out now. It's like at my waist level now. I cannot go anywhere. I have been closing my shop for two days now." She noted that the flooding appears to be worse than the major flooding event in 2011, which resulted in hundreds of fatalities across Thailand. Currently, no casualties have been reported from the ongoing flooding in Bangkok. The Thai Meteorological Service has forecast additional heavy rain throughout the week, although the low-pressure area causing the recent downpours is expected to shift towards central Thailand. All 50 districts in Bangkok have been designated as emergency zones. Chadchart Sittipunt, the city's governor, stated that the eastern part of the city has been most severely affected, and efforts are ongoing to pump water out of the canals, which are currently at capacity.
