Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized legislation proposed by Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., which aims to dismantle DHS and abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Mullin stated, "Radical leftists are calling to defund the police and abolish DHS. It’s NEVER going to happen. Our 270,000 DHS patriots are keeping Americans SAFE — unlike this open-borders politician who refuses to prioritize Americans over illegal aliens."
A DHS spokesperson added that Ramirez should appreciate law enforcement for their efforts in removing dangerous criminals from her district rather than vilifying them. The spokesperson noted a significant increase in assaults against law enforcement, attributing it to the rhetoric surrounding ICE.
The legislation, known as the Reimagining Safety Act, proposes the creation of a "Department of Community Safety" while preserving certain agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The bill would abolish ICE and initiate the establishment of a separate civil immigration system, as well as dismantle Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Calls to abolish ICE have gained traction among Democrats in recent months, particularly following criticisms of President Trump’s immigration policies. Ramirez responded to the criticism from the Trump administration, stating, "Every day, Americans wake up with a new reason to dismantle DHS, reimagine safety, and build something that honors our shared humanity." She emphasized the need for a department that reflects the best aspects of society and addresses accountability and corruption.
