As the Los Angeles Lakers transition from the era of LeBron James, the team is looking for its current stars to step up as leaders. Luka Doncic has expressed his readiness to take on this role. During a recent minicamp in Slovenia, Doncic stated, "Probably the leadership role... Trying to be a leader. Five years ago, I was [three years in] the league. I wasn’t the leader I was supposed to [be]. So, leadership is an important part in my case now."
Since being traded to the Lakers in February 2025, Doncic has demonstrated his leadership qualities, including treating teammates to a Porsche Driving Experience and gifting e-bikes to staff during the holiday season. He also organized a five-day trip for his teammates in Slovenia, which included various activities such as dining, sightseeing, and basketball events. Teammates expressed their appreciation, with Collin Sexton stating, "I’m definitely coming back. We had an amazing time. Great experience. Nothing but good vibes, nothing but love. Luka, man, appreciate you for bringing us out to your country and taking us back where it all started."
With James and several other key players not returning for the upcoming season, Doncic, along with Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Jake LaRavia, will be among the few players returning from last season’s roster. Coach JJ Redick emphasized the importance of team connectedness, noting that successful teams in the NBA have been the most connected. He aims to foster this connection throughout the 2026-27 season, stating, "I really believe this group is gonna be connected from Day 1. And they already are." Doncic echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of building chemistry with new teammates.
