Met Police Reopens Investigation into Jill Dando's Murder Following CCTV Evidence

The Metropolitan Police have initiated a new investigation into the unsolved murder of Jill Dando after a breakthrough in CCTV evidence. Dando, a BBC Crimewatch presenter, was shot in the head on her doorstep in Fulham in April 1999, and her killer has not been identified. The police confirmed they will re-examine original footage from Putney Bridge Tube station, which captured an unidentified man, referred to as Man X, walking along a potential escape route approximately 20 minutes after Dando's murder. This man is believed to resemble Milorad Ulemek, a Serbian assassin currently serving a 137-year prison sentence for war crimes. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that recent advancements in CCTV enhancement technology have allowed for a re-evaluation of the footage. Ulemek was first linked to the case in 2024 by The Mirror, based on a facial comparison expert's analysis. The CCTV footage from the Tube station, located about one mile from Dando's residence, shows Man X walking near the crime scene shortly after the shooting. Cold-case officers have spent ten months digitizing the original footage using modern forensic imaging technology to determine Ulemek's presence at the station on the night of the murder. Witnesses had previously reported seeing a man in a suit running away from the scene, with one witness expressing a high degree of certainty that it was Ulemek. Ulemek, a former French Foreign Legionnaire, was involved in paramilitary operations during the Yugoslav wars. Prior to Dando's death, he was reportedly asked to assassinate a leading journalist but declined due to his commitments in Kosovo. Following her murder, the BBC received a call suggesting that Dando was targeted in retaliation for a NATO attack on a TV station in Belgrade, which resulted in 17 deaths. Dando had previously hosted a television appeal that raised £54 million for Kosovan refugees fleeing Serbian paramilitaries during the civil conflict. Her murder has been widely speculated to have been carried out by a professional assassin. Barry George was convicted of her murder but was exonerated on appeal in 2007.
