Police Investigate Deaths of Ten Women in Ekurhuleni, South Africa

Police in South Africa have reported the discovery of another body in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, bringing the total number of women found dead in the area in recent months to ten. The latest body was found on Saturday morning and identified by a friend who had been with the victim at a bar the previous evening. Local police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni stated that authorities could not rule out the possibility of a serial killer, noting similarities among the ten deaths in Ekurhuleni and another in Soweto. The latest body was discovered at a cemetery in the Tembisa neighborhood, northeast of central Johannesburg. Police have stated that crime scene investigators are currently gathering evidence, though the victim has not yet been publicly identified. The friend of the victim expressed her grief, stating, "I don't know what I'm going to say to her children. It's painful." Commissioner Mthombeni indicated that it is too early in the investigation to determine if this death is linked to the others, but noted that the previous bodies shared a "similar victimology" suggesting a potential common method of killing. He added, "For now, it's not something which we can overrule to say there's a serial killer, but we cannot conclusively indicate as such." South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates globally, with 5,427 murders reported between April and June of this year. The nature of these recent killings has caused significant concern among women in the area. The ten bodies have been found under similar circumstances since July, with most located in Kempton Park, a neighboring area to Tembisa. Many of the victims were young women, and nearly all had suffered extreme violence prior to their deaths. This situation has intensified pressure on the national government, which had previously declared gender-based violence a national disaster less than a year ago. While police statistics do not differentiate victims by gender, the South African Human Rights Commission reported last week that 569 women were killed and 1,052 others survived attempted murder between April and June this year. Three men were recently charged in connection with one of the nine prior murders, and police are actively searching for additional suspects.
