Couple Injured in Bear Attack While Dog Fatally Injured During Incident

<p>A late-night encounter with a black bear resulted in injuries for a Northern California couple and the death of their French bulldog. The incident occurred on September 19 at the couple's home in Trinity County.</p><p>According to reports, the couple, Jeff and Mallory Wilson, were attacked after their dog, Cassie, barked, prompting Jeff to check the backyard. Upon opening the door, a cinnamon-colored black bear lunged at him, knocking him to the ground. Mallory then went outside and was also attacked.</p><p>Jeff Wilson stated, "I think the bear was startled by us just as much as we were startled by it," in an interview with Redheaded Blackbelt.</p><p>During the attack, Cassie intervened, placing herself between the bear and her owners. The bear grabbed Cassie and attempted to run away with her. The couple managed to scare the bear off and rushed their dog to emergency care.</p><p>Cassie underwent surgery for multiple wounds but died two days later. The GoFundMe page set up for the couple described Cassie as a "deeply loved member of their family." Jeff Wilson suffered two broken ribs and numerous bite and claw wounds, while Mallory sustained serious injuries to her head and face.</p><p>The couple owns Radio Ranch, an off-the-grid glamping retreat, and reportedly has experience living alongside wildlife. They expressed their love for the natural world and acknowledged the encounter as an unprovoked and unusual incident.</p><p>Following the attack, the couple canceled their Radio Ranch reservations while they recover and cooperate with an investigation by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The fundraiser for their medical bills and other expenses has raised over $16,000 of its $20,000 goal.</p><p>The CDFW noted that black bear attacks resulting in human injuries are rare in California and advised residents to secure food and garbage that may attract bears, keep pets indoors at night, and to fight back if attacked.</p><p>This incident is part of a series of high-profile bear encounters in California, including break-ins in the Lake Tahoe region and separate attacks involving grizzly bears.</p>
