Four individuals were killed and four others injured near Kingstown, the capital of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in an incident believed to be linked to gang violence. Police received reports of gunfire in the Green Hill community on Friday night, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Trevor Bailey during a news conference on Saturday.
"Two bodies were met lying on the public road," Bailey stated. "The body of a female was discovered in a vehicle that was parked on the public road, and on an adjacent piece of land another body was discovered." A preliminary examination indicated that all four victims sustained gunshot wounds. Four additional individuals were transported to Milton Cato Memorial Hospital with gunshot injuries; two were treated and discharged, while two remained hospitalized as of Saturday.
No arrests have been made, and the police have not publicly identified a motive for the shootings. Assistant Commissioner of Police Brenton Smith informed reporters, "Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make any arrests in regards to last night’s shooting. And as soon as the intelligence and investigation is completed, you will know the motives."
This incident occurs amid ongoing gang violence and retaliatory attacks between rival factions, with police reporting 37 homicides in the nation so far this year. "We have seen some retaliation … one group hitting back at another," Bailey noted, condemning the violence.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a 32-island nation known for its beaches and clear waters, is a popular destination for yachting tourism and has historically depended on tourism as a primary economic driver. In response to the recent violence, authorities are increasing patrols, conducting searches, and enhancing intelligence sharing among police units. Bailey urged young people to avoid involvement in criminal activities, stating, "I call upon the young people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to be model citizens, to desist from the path of crime and violence. Violence has no part in our society."
