Three individuals were arrested on September 26, 2026, for illegal poaching at Angeles National Park in Los Angeles County, California. Officers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) received tips about illegal deer hunting activities in the area. During targeted night patrols, officers observed two vehicles off-roading and using a spotlight, which is an illegal hunting method. Upon stopping the vehicles, officers noticed blood on the suspects' clothing and hands, leading to a further investigation.
The investigation revealed that the suspects had firearms and two female deer, one of which was completely skinned and the other cut into four pieces. Both deer were headless and found inside black trash bags. The suspects allegedly admitted to killing the deer illegally and attempting to conceal the evidence. They were arrested but released with the condition that they would appear in court.
The arrests occurred shortly after the opening of nearly two dozen deer hunt zones across California for rifle hunting on September 19. According to the CDFW, deer tag sales in 2025 generated approximately $7 million, which supports big game conservation, habitat protection, and scientific research. Additionally, the CDFW reported the arrest of lobster poachers at the Santa Monica Pier two months prior, where 34 lobsters, including several egg-bearing females, were returned to the sea.
