One dead as nor'easter storm impacts New York and New Jersey

Tens of millions of people across the northeastern United States are experiencing the effects of a powerful storm this weekend, which has resulted in coastal flooding, power outages, travel disruptions, and the cancellation of various events. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the nor'easter brought dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds, and heavy rainfall to areas including New York City and Boston on Saturday. States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey, where some regions faced significant flooding. Rain and strong winds were expected from Virginia to Maine. In Brooklyn, New York City, a 56-year-old man named Leighton Brown, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority, was killed by a falling tree while working an extra shift. The Office of the NYC Public Advocate expressed condolences on social media, stating, "We mourn deeply for the loss of Leighton Brown, who faithfully served Brooklyn residents and was known for his warm personality." The storm has caused widespread power outages, affecting over 160,000 households in the northeastern US, according to PowerOutage. More than 2,400 flights were delayed and another 1,199 were grounded on Saturday, as reported by FlightAware. A full moon was expected to exacerbate coastal flooding, with streets and homes inundated in coastal New Jersey communities such as Surf City and Manasquan. The NWS warned of significant inundation in low-lying areas near the shore, including underwater roads and impacts to homes and businesses. In New York, officials warned of wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph (86 km/h) throughout the weekend, which could lead to downed trees and power lines. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents in a video message, "Don't travel if you don't have to. Do not drive or walk through floodwater." In the Boston area, the Red Sox rescheduled their last game against the Chicago Cubs to Sunday afternoon in Florida. Additionally, a professional football match between Red Bull New York and St Louis City SC was canceled. The Global Citizen Festival concert in New York City's Central Park, featuring Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and John Legend, was also canceled, along with Ed Sheeran's concert at Gillette Stadium in Boston, which was called off for safety reasons.
