Counter Terrorism Policing has confirmed that they are leading an investigation into an incident that occurred overnight near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. At approximately 12:45 AM on 27 September 2026, police received a report regarding three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be heading towards the air base. Armed officers responded to the situation and arrested five men in the Whelford area on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act. They were also arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, in violation of section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that the investigation is in its early stages and that the five men remain in custody. She emphasized that they are collaborating closely with partners to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident. A 400-meter cordon has been established around the vehicles while the Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit conducts examinations. As a precaution, approximately 85 households have been evacuated during these examinations.
Gloucestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone noted that emergency services have established well-rehearsed plans for managing major incidents. He mentioned that a cordon is in place as a precaution and that the public can expect to see a significant emergency services presence in the area for an extended period. A nearby leisure center has been opened to provide a safe space for those evacuated who cannot stay with friends or relatives. He thanked residents for their understanding and support during the disruption and reassured them that efforts are being made to return them to their homes as quickly as possible. Ocone urged the public not to speculate and to follow official channels for updates.
