<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) suggested a ban on naming buildings after living politicians during an appearance on CBS News’s <em>Face the Nation</em>. This proposal could lead to conflict with the White House.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kennedy was responding to a government-funded advertisement praising President Donald Trump. He expressed his belief that public officials should not use public funds for self-promotion, which includes naming buildings after living individuals.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I don’t think any public official, including President Trump, or Kristi Noem, or John Kennedy, should spend public money on private ads for themselves. Now, the White House sees it differently, but I don’t. I think there ought to be a rule that you can’t. Well, there probably is a rule. You can’t spend public money to promote yourself,” Kennedy stated.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kennedy humorously remarked, “I may end up with a sombrero on my head, but I also think that we ought to have a rule that no politician can have a building named after him while he’s alive.” He referenced a previous AI video involving Trump and other politicians. “I think that would settle a lot of the controversy. We have that rule in Louisiana. It works pretty well.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kennedy’s proposal comes amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to have the president’s name reinstated on the Kennedy Center, which was removed following a court order. The administration has pursued various legal options to restore the name, which has drawn criticism from Democrats.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is uncommon for senators to publicly oppose Trump, and even more so for allies like Kennedy to do so. Trump's influence within the Republican Party has led to a generally unified front among congressional Republicans.</p>
