PostmarketOS has officially rebranded as Nura, a decision announced during a conference. The name change follows a year-and-a-half selection process, as team members faced challenges with the original name's complexity and pronunciation across various languages. The previous name's grammatical structure, with a lowercase 'p' and 'm' alongside an uppercase 'OS', led to confusion in its representation. Additionally, the descriptive nature of 'postmarketOS' limited the project's scope and trademark potential, which the team deemed important for protecting against misuse.
The team believes that a simpler name will enhance recognition beyond the hacker community. The logo will remain unchanged, but minor updates have been made for improved legibility. The new name, Nura, was selected from over 300 community suggestions, evaluated by a selection team. It received a mean score of 0.4 in a range voting process.
The project will transition to a .eco domain, aligning with its ecological mission. The team encourages contributions to update user-facing strings to reflect the new name and welcomes reminders for any missed updates.
