Newark Mayor Critiques State Police Tactics at Delaney Hall Following Protests

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka expressed disagreement with the tactics employed by New Jersey State Police after they were directed by Governor Mikie Sherrill to secure the area outside Delaney Hall. He described the state police as 'a sword' and emphasized the need for careful consideration of their use. Protests occurred outside the detention center in Newark after detainees alleged mistreatment, including physical and psychological abuse. Governor Sherrill stated that the deployment of the state police was necessary for public safety and to prevent escalation from ICE. Baraka acknowledged the governor's authority but criticized the specific tactics used by the police. He called for more collaborative discussions involving local authorities in future decisions. Additionally, Baraka mentioned ongoing litigation against GEO Group, the operators of Delaney Hall, citing health and safety concerns related to the facility. Newark's Business Administrator, Eric Pennington, indicated plans to seek access to Delaney Hall to ensure the well-being of detainees and to potentially expand the lawsuit against GEO Group if necessary. A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security stated that detainees are provided with adequate food and care.
