Marco Rubio Discusses Iranian Military Capabilities

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on June 2, 2026, that the destruction of Iran's military has hindered the country's ability to use a conventional defense to protect its nuclear program. During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting, Rubio claimed that if the United States had not initiated Operation Epic Fury earlier in the year, Iran would have developed a significant arsenal of missiles, drones, and conventional weapons, including a navy. He described the current state of the Iranian Navy as lacking, stating, 'There is no Iranian Navy... just a bunch of Boston Whalers with machine guns on them.' He further commented that the remnants of the navy would soon become fishing reefs. Rubio's testimony was his first since the operation began in late February, where he also addressed the Trump administration's goals regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's enriched uranium.
