Adam Lambert Pays Tribute to George Michael at the 2026 MTV VMAs

Adam Lambert made a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards 2026 on Sunday night to pay tribute to George Michael, who passed away on December 25, 2016, at the age of 53. The tribute began with Orville Peck announcing that "George Michael was a pop god," followed by Sombr performing an energetic version of "Faith" and a heartfelt rendition of "Father Figure." Raye then joined the stage to perform Michael’s 1987 duet with Aretha Franklin, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," and Teddy Swims sang the classic "Careless Whisper" as the audience participated. Lambert, dressed in a fringed and studded black outfit, concluded the tribute with a lively performance of "Freedom! (’90)," accompanied by backup singers and musicians, including Sombr, Raye, and Swims. The tribute was announced on Tuesday, with Rolling Stone reporting that Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims would honor the four-time VMA winner. The timing coincides with the upcoming live album and concert film, "George Michael: The Faith Tour," set to be released in theaters on December 11, as Michael’s "Faith" album approaches its 40th anniversary since its 1987 release. VMAs producer Van Toffler stated that the film, featuring previously unseen footage, contributed to the tribute's significance. He recalled Michael’s performance of "Freedom! ’90" during MTV’s 10th anniversary special in 1991 as "unbelievable." Toffler emphasized that the VMAs were recognizing Michael’s music rather than presenting him with an award. Raye, 28, made her solo VMAs performance debut during the event and was nominated for two awards, including Song of the Year for her hit "WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!" Sombr, 21, returned to the VMAs stage after debuting last year and was nominated for three awards for his song "Homewrecker." Teddy Swims, 33, returned to the VMAs for the first time since 2024, when his hit "Lose Control" earned him four nominations.
