Venezuelans Demand Return of Opposition Leader and Presidential Elections

Hundreds of supporters of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado have gathered in the streets to call for her safe return and for presidential elections that could facilitate a democratic transition in the country. The protests occurred in Caracas and other cities, including Valencia, Maracaibo, and Merida, with participants wearing sky blue shirts representing Machado's Vente Venezuela party and displaying Venezuelan flags. Flavio Valentini, a Vente Venezuela activist, stated, "This is not a matter of parties or politics. This is a movement for the people and by the people." The demonstrations coincided with the return of Machado's aide, Claudia Macero, from exile, who was welcomed by supporters at the Caracas airport. Macero expressed hope for Machado's return, stating, "Maria Corina is trying every day to come home. Evidently there is a very difficult process, but this will come to an end." Machado has been in exile for nine months, with her attempts to return reportedly blocked by the Venezuelan government, a claim denied by authorities. Vente Venezuela leaders expressed hope that the transition process would lead to presidential elections and a democratic country aligned with the United States. The Venezuelan government has faced accusations of electoral fraud, imprisoning dissidents, and suppressing free speech. Recently, more than three dozen political prisoners were released following negotiations between the interim government and the opposition, supported by the United States. Machado, who was barred from participating in the last presidential election, has been a prominent figure in the opposition. The current government, led by Delcy Rodriguez, has been accused of election manipulation, and Rodriguez indicated at the United Nations General Assembly that elections would be held as part of a transition to full democracy, although no date was provided.
