Sweden experiences political deadlock as center-left bloc fails to form government

Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, has announced the abandonment of efforts to form a four-party government following her bloc's narrow election victory. The failure to establish a government has resulted in political deadlock in Sweden, which has been without a new government for more than two weeks after the election. Andersson was attempting to unite the Social Democrats, Greens, Center Party, and Left Party, which collectively secured 176 of the 349 seats in parliament. However, negotiations collapsed due to significant divisions between the centrist Center Party and the socialist Left Party. "Based on the discussions I have had, I can conclude that, as things currently stand, it is not possible for me to form a government," Andersson stated during a press conference. The four-party bloc's 176 seats were slightly ahead of the outgoing right-wing alliance, which obtained 173 seats, with a popular vote difference of approximately 50,000. The speaker of parliament is expected to invite another party leader to attempt to form a government, with outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of the center-right Moderate Party being a likely candidate. Kristersson is currently leading a caretaker government, but his bloc, which includes the far-right Sweden Democrats, has also not secured a majority and may require support from the Center Party. Center Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist has ruled out backing a government that would grant influence to either the Sweden Democrats or the Left Party. Prolonged government formation is not uncommon in Sweden; it took 37 days to establish a government after the 2022 election and 134 days following the 2018 vote.
