<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) has received criticism following the release of a new campaign advertisement that depicts an unemployed white man as a welfare recipient. The ad was released on Monday and highlights Huckabee Sanders’s support for welfare work requirements.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The advertisement features a young white man named Brad, who is shown playing video games and eating snacks in a dark room.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the ad, Huckabee Sanders states, "Brad has turned relaxing into a full-time profession." She continues, addressing viewers, "But you, you actually work hard. You pay taxes to cover welfare for guys like Brad, who just choose not to work. That’s why I launched a welfare-to-work requirement."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The portrayal of Brad has sparked swift backlash on social media from conservative figures, who argue that white men are a significant voter base for the Republican Party.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Will Chamberlain, Senior Counsel at the Internet Accountability Project, criticized the ad on social media, stating, "This is a massive own goal, @SarahHuckabee, and you should fire the consultants who made this ad. Do not portray your core voting bloc as losers, period."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jake Bequette, a former NFL player and 2022 Senate candidate in Arkansas, commented, "Years ago, Democrats abandoned young white men and turned them into enemies for political purposes. It was only a matter of time until Republicans explicitly did the same. That time is now. The crown is in the gutter for anyone who unapologetically fights for young white men."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Washington Examiner reached out to Huckabee Sanders’s office for a response.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to CNN exit polling from 2024, Trump won 60% of the white male vote, with gains among young men, winning that demographic 53% to 45%.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some social media users expressed racist sentiments regarding welfare recipients and criticized Huckabee Sanders for the ad.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Democrats have noted the backlash, with some calling it the “first honest TV ad” for Republicans in decades. Democratic commentator Keith Olbermann remarked, "Hilarious: Huck puts out the first honest TV ad by a Republican in 75 years and the White Power GOP Party is big mad that the welfare leech shown is a white guy named Brad."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other Democrats condemned the Republican response to the ad, labeling the party as racist and antisemitic.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Progressive media company MeidasTouch pointed out that some Republicans were upset about the depiction of a white man on welfare, with some blaming Jewish individuals for the ad's backlash.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In response to the criticism, Huckabee Sanders stated on social media, "If you are able-bodied you should not collect welfare simply because you choose not to work. Period."</p>
