Nor’easter Causes Significant Erosion at Rockaway Beach

The recent nor’easter has caused substantial erosion along the Rockaway coastline in Queens, New York, affecting the beach at Jacob Riis Park. The storm resulted in dangerous drop-offs and exposed black sand, with waves reaching heights that impacted the city streets. A Parks Department worker reported that much of the beach is now gone, with sand being displaced towards Breezy Point. Wooden jetties that were previously covered by sand were revealed due to the storm's effects. The lone stone jetty at the federal park helped preserve some beach area. Measurements indicated that a dune pile transformed into a 14-foot sand cliff, and sand levels rose as high as 26 inches along the boardwalk. Local resident John Thuilot described experiencing the power of the waves while surfing during the storm. The area now resembles a construction zone, contrasting sharply with its previous state. Damage assessments revealed that nearly 30 feet of beach was lost in some areas. Concerns have been raised about the timeline for repairs, with City Councilwoman Joann Ariola emphasizing the need for immediate action to ensure safety for residents and to avoid impacting the summer season. The National Parks Service oversees Riis Park, while the city and the US Corps of Engineers manage the surrounding residential areas. The Corps is currently evaluating the situation and developing a plan, noting that previous projects have aimed to mitigate coastal flooding impacts.
