Tennessee Man Charged with Murder of Kentucky State Trooper During Traffic Stop

<p>Emonnie Branch, a 51-year-old man from Tennessee, has been charged with the murder of Kentucky State Trooper Hayden Phillips during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Warren County. Branch was on probation and had a criminal record that included assault, fraud, and illegal possession of a firearm.</p><p>Branch was denied bond on the murder charge, which is classified as the murder of a first responder. His probation was set to end in July 2030, following a conviction related to fraud. Sumner County District Attorney Thomas Dean stated that Branch was already wanted for a probation violation linked to his securities fraud conviction prior to the incident.</p><p>Commonwealth’s Attorney Kori Bumgarner noted during the arraignment that Branch has an extensive criminal history, including attempted domestic assault and violating a no-contact order. Court records also revealed a 2009 conviction for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.</p><p>Branch was arrested twice this year for probation violations and is currently being held without bond on the murder charge and a fugitive charge. Authorities issued a statewide Blue Alert for Branch, who was captured by Louisville Metro Police later that evening.</p><p>Trooper Phillips was shot during a traffic stop on Monday. U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner described the incident as a senseless murder, emphasizing the impact on Phillips' family, including his wife and three young sons.</p><p>Kentucky State Police Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. condemned Branch’s actions and assured that justice would be pursued for Phillips. He also promised support for Phillips' family during this time.</p><p>Phillips was a veteran of the Kentucky State Police, having served for three years. A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. local time to honor his memory. Governor Andy Beshear has ordered flags at state buildings to be lowered to half-staff in tribute to Phillips, calling him a hero who sacrificed everything to protect the community.</p><p>Phillips' wife, Jordan, expressed her grief on social media, vowing to carry on for their children and asking others to share memories of her husband.</p>
