BBC Removes Article Linking Bare Nails Trend to Beauty Standards

The BBC has removed an article that suggested the trend of leaving fingernails unpainted could perpetuate 'White supremacist' beauty standards following backlash on Saturday. The article, titled 'How the bare nails trend became a class issue,' discussed the preference for clear and polished 'naked' nails over more elaborate designs in recent years. While some view this trend as part of evolving fashion standards, critics argued it could stigmatize Black, Latino, and Asian communities that popularized more decorative nails. Beauty journalist Kristina Rodulfo stated, 'That trend really promotes blankness and this kind of sameness and erasure of culture and identity that is so important to [B]lack and [B]rown communities,' adding that terms like 'elegant' or 'tasteful' often serve as euphemisms that reinforce 'White supremacist standards of beauty.' The article faced significant criticism for its connections between nail design and issues of racism or class. Helen Joyce, Director of Advocacy for Sex Matters, criticized the article as 'stupid' and 'pointless,' while radio host Dana Loesch questioned the article's credibility. Danielle Franz, CEO of the American Conservation Coalition, humorously remarked on the implications for women opting for bare nails. Harry Cole, editor-at-large for The Sun, expressed disbelief at the article's claims. Following the backlash, the BBC removed the article and replaced it with a statement indicating it was pending editorial review. However, as of Tuesday, that statement was also removed, and the original URL led to a 404 error page. Fox News Digital attempted to contact the BBC for comment but did not receive an immediate response. This incident follows a recent legal dispute involving President Donald Trump and the BBC regarding edited footage of his speech in a documentary. Trump's legal team described the ruling in their favor as a significant victory against the BBC, which they accused of defamation and deceptive practices. The controversy also preceded the resignations of BBC News CEO Deborah Turness and Director-General Tim Davie in November 2025.
