Elijah Hemingway, 32, is accused of killing a Pittsburgh pediatrician and critically injuring his wife during a home invasion. Prior to this incident, he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in Wilkinsburg on Wednesday morning, according to the Allegheny County Police Department. The woman reported that Hemingway ambushed her while she was walking along a path and stole her cell phone during the assault. The victim did not know Hemingway before the incident.
Following the report, Wilkinsburg police informed Allegheny County detectives, who investigated the sexual assault alongside the homicide case. Detectives recovered multiple items linking Hemingway to the sexual assault and the stolen cell phone. After consulting with the district attorney’s office, additional charges were filed against Hemingway, including rape, sexual assault, and robbery.
The sexual assault occurred just hours before Hemingway allegedly entered the home of Dr. Idris Evans, 46, and his wife, stabbing them while they were asleep early Thursday morning. Dr. Evans was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. According to a police report, Hemingway attacked the couple while in his underwear and exhibited erratic behavior, claiming to be “God.” During the struggle, Evans’ wife called for their children, aged 8 and 12, to escape the house. She reported that Evans referred to the attacker as “Elijah,” suggesting a possible prior connection, although authorities could not confirm any relationship.
Hemingway provided a conflicting account of the events, claiming he had been invited into the home by Evans and that he had been attacked first. However, police found no evidence to support his claims, including a stab wound on his back or a bicycle he mentioned using to reach the home. Hemingway faces seven charges related to the home invasion, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing. Court records indicate that he has a criminal history dating back to 2016 and was released without bail in July after a February burglary.
