Adolfo 'Fito' Macias is the leader of the Los Choneros gang, which was designated as a terrorist organization by the United States in 2025. In January 2024, he escaped from an Ecuadorian prison where he was serving a 34-year sentence for drug trafficking and murder. His escape led to a state of emergency in Ecuador due to increased violence, particularly in Guayaquil. He was recaptured and extradited to the US in 2025, where he faces multiple charges, including drug and weapons trafficking, and has pleaded not guilty.
