The United Arab Emirates' chief prosecutor announced an investigation into an alleged attempted hijacking of a flydubai commercial flight to Tel Aviv, citing the possibility of "terrorist activity or intent." The investigation follows an incident on Wednesday, where the copilot reportedly stabbed the pilot and attempted to crash the aircraft. The UAE has jurisdiction over the case as the aircraft is registered in the country.
The state news agency WAM reported that the investigation team has begun its work to determine whether the incident was premeditated and involved multiple actors or if it was the act of a lone perpetrator. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz referred to the incident as an "attempted jihadist terror attack" that was thwarted.
Passengers intervened during the incident, with many rushing to the cockpit to assist the pilot, who sustained injuries. Most passengers, primarily Israeli, were unharmed aside from minor injuries. The aircraft was flying over northern Saudi Arabia when the incident occurred and made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the UAE would likely lead the investigation. He mentioned that the attacking copilot is currently being investigated in Saudi Arabia and may be transferred to the UAE. The identity of the copilot has not been disclosed, and his motive remains unclear. US President Donald Trump commented that the suspect might be "perhaps a terrorist or perhaps a whack-job."
In light of the incident, Israeli President Isaac Herzog plans to nominate four passengers who helped subdue the attacker for the Presidential Medal for Civil Courage. Herzog praised the passengers for their bravery, stating, "You put yourselves at risk to save others and prevented a terrible disaster."
The Indian pilot, Smit Machchhar, received commendations for his actions during the incident and is currently in stable condition in a Saudi hospital. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar's courage and resolve in protecting the lives of others.
