The Big East Conference is not expected to adopt new eligibility rules for the upcoming season, unlike other major conferences. The decision comes after a court ruling in Louisiana allowed certain NFL training camp players to return to college for a fifth year under the NCAA's new age-based eligibility rule, which grants athletes five seasons of eligibility within a five-year period. In response, the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, and ACC have implemented rules that prevent players who declared for the NFL Draft, appeared on an NFL roster, or signed a professional contract from returning to college.
The Big East, which does not sponsor football and does not have players looking to return after signing professional contracts, has opted not to make changes at this time. Recently, the Big Ten announced a unanimous decision to declare players who sign contracts with the NBA, G-League, or WNBA ineligible to return to its schools, with similar measures adopted by the Big 12, SEC, and ACC for basketball.
Big East Commissioner Tim Brosnan stated, "We monitor this day to day. Our perspective is the overall health of the conference, but are we going to inject ourselves into fights that it’s really not our fight, to be candid? No. To prove a point? No." He added that the conference intends to draft rules that align with NCAA regulations during the offseason.
