The House Ethics Committee is conducting an investigation into California Congressman Jimmy Gomez regarding allegations of sexual misconduct. This inquiry follows Gomez's admission of infidelity with a congressional aide. The investigation was prompted by a report from the New York Post, which claimed Gomez was seen kissing a female staffer at a party in 2023. Gomez's spokesperson initially denied the allegations, stating that the incident did not occur. However, during the investigation, additional allegations of misconduct were uncovered.
In a statement to CNN, Gomez acknowledged his infidelity and expressed his intention to cooperate with the Ethics Committee. He stated, "Years ago, I made personal mistakes outside my marriage that have caused real pain to my wife and family." He emphasized that while his actions were consensual and did not violate any laws or House ethics rules, he takes full responsibility for the impact on his family.
Gomez also apologized to his wife, family, and constituents, stating that he is committed to working through these personal matters privately. The Ethics Committee is also investigating Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards over separate allegations of sexual harassment involving female staffers. Edwards has denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
