House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated on Tuesday that Democrats are not currently focused on impeaching President Donald Trump if they regain a majority in the next Congress. Speaking at the CNBC CEO Council Summit in Washington, Jeffries emphasized that the party's priority is on affordability as they aim to flip the House in the upcoming November midterm elections. He described the Trump administration as 'completely and totally out of control' but did not commit to impeachment proceedings, saying, 'We haven't ruled anything in; we haven't ruled anything out.'
Jeffries noted that Trump, who has been impeached twice during his first term, has warned that Democrats would pursue impeachment if they regain control of the House. However, he indicated that impeachment may be ineffective without a significant majority in the Senate, where Republicans are expected to maintain a narrow advantage.
Instead, Democrats are focusing on addressing what they consider corruption within the Trump administration. Jeffries remarked that the GOP appears 'not focused on actually solving problems for the American people.' He expressed confidence in the upcoming midterms, referencing recent Democratic victories in special elections.
Jeffries also mentioned that a Democratic majority would prioritize anti-corruption measures, including a potential ban on stock trading by members of Congress and an internal rule against betting on prediction markets, similar to a ban already enacted by Senators in April.
