The state did not administer the lethal drugs, and Governor Bill Lee (R-TN) granted Carruthers a one-year reprieve, delaying his execution until at least May 2027.</p><p>Following Pike’s failed execution, Lee ordered a pause on all statewide executions through the end of the year and directed an independent review into what went wrong.</p><p>“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” Lee said.</p>
