Latino Democratic Leaders Call for Increased Support for Gina Hinojosa in Texas Governor's Race

Latino Democratic leaders are urging the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) to increase its financial support for Texas gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa. This call follows a New York Times/Siena College poll indicating Hinojosa has a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott, with a three-point advantage that falls within the poll's margin of error. Hinojosa faces a significant financial challenge, with Abbott's campaign and Republican allies outspending her by approximately 10-to-1. Over 70 Latino Democratic leaders sent a letter to the DGA and its chair, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, requesting an investment of $10 million in the Texas governor's race. Beshear, who may consider a presidential run in 2028, has been limited by the DGA's obligations to protect incumbent Democratic governors, many of whom are in secure positions. Julián Castro, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former mayor of San Antonio, reiterated the call for support on social media, questioning how much more evidence of Hinojosa's viability in Texas is needed for the DGA to provide substantial backing.
