Hakeem Jeffries withholds endorsement for Debbie Wasserman Schultz's reelection

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced on Tuesday that he has not yet made a decision regarding his support for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's (D-Fla.) reelection. This statement comes amid discontent over her candidacy in a majority-minority district. Jeffries is typically known for supporting his fellow Democrats, making this decision notable among his colleagues. A senior House Democrat remarked, "He's never done that," referring to Jeffries' usual backing of incumbents. Jeffries stated, "I stand behind every single House Democratic incumbent," but did not confirm his endorsement for Wasserman Schultz. He acknowledged the sensitivities surrounding her campaign, particularly the concerns from Black Democrats regarding her decision to run in a district with a plurality of Black voters. Jeffries emphasized that all candidates must present their case to the voters they wish to represent. While he praised Wasserman Schultz's accomplishments, he also recognized the challenges facing Black political representation. The primary for the district is scheduled for August 18, and there is still time for Jeffries to endorse her. Other candidates in the Democratic primary include activist Elijah Manley, former Broward County mayor Dale Holeness, and former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. Wasserman Schultz expressed gratitude for the support she has received and reiterated her commitment to engaging with voters in her district.
