<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/nebraska/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Nebraska</a> independent Senate candidate <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/4564234/democrats-bait-and-switch-boost-nebraska-independent-candidate/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dan Osborn</a> stated on Tuesday that his recent criticism of rural supporters of President <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/donald-trump/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> was driven by passion. This comment followed the release of a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSV3lgh7lbM" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">leaked audio</a> in which he suggested that a hypothetical voter in Red Cloud, Nebraska, supports Trump because he perceives himself as part of a winning team and because of difficult life circumstances.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Osborn remarked, "It came from a place of passion and wanting to stand up for those folks out in Red Cloud whose lives have gotten harder," during a press event where he received an endorsement from the National Security Leaders for America.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Osborn is competing against Sen. <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/state/4754475/watch-live-trump-nebraska-midterm-rally/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pete Ricketts</a> (R-NE) in the upcoming November election after previously losing to Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) in 2024. He has garnered support from Democrats in what is considered a moderately competitive race, despite Trump winning Nebraska by over 20 points in the last election. Recent polling indicates that Osborn is within a close range of Ricketts, prompting Republicans to allocate additional resources to the race.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Monday, Trump held a campaign rally for Ricketts and Gov. Jim Pillen (R-NE) as part of a broader campaign effort ahead of the midterm elections. Ricketts and national Republican figures have highlighted Osborn's remarks about Trump supporters in their campaign strategies, including in advertisements. Osborn noted that the recording of his comments was made over a year ago and stated that he has taken accountability for his statements. He has previously expressed regret and apologized to voters.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Osborn commented on the political landscape, saying, "That’s what we’re lacking in modern-day politics is accountability," and attributed rising living costs to Trump’s policies, including the Iran war and tariffs. He added, "What I should have said is people’s lives are exponentially harder."</p>

Nonpartisan analysts currently favor Ricketts to retain his seat.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In response to Osborn's comments, Ricketts stated, "Nebraskans don’t need a candidate who looks down on them," in a recent social media post that accompanied a campaign advertisement featuring Osborn's remarks.</p>
