U.S. F-15 Pilot Survives Two Shootdowns in Recent Conflicts

A U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle pilot, who was shot down by Iran, previously survived another shootdown due to a friendly fire incident involving Kuwaiti forces on March 2. According to national security reporter Sean Naylor, the pilot was flying one of three F-15E jets that were mistakenly engaged by Kuwaiti air defenses during the early days of the conflict in Iran. The pilot ejected safely and returned to duty before being shot down again on April 3 during combat operations over Iran. In the second incident, both crew members ejected, with one rescued shortly after and the other recovered the following day after a search-and-rescue operation. The pilot's identity has not been disclosed. Military officials stated that the March 2 incident was due to an apparent friendly fire as Kuwaiti forces responded to Iranian attacks. Kuwait later accepted responsibility for the shootdowns, and investigations were initiated by both countries. The April shootdown marked a significant combat loss for the U.S., leading to a large-scale rescue effort. The pilot is believed to be the first fixed-wing Air Force pilot to survive being shot down twice in the same conflict since the Vietnam War.
