Hakeem Jeffries Criticizes Republican Spending Strategies in New York House Races

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Republican spending strategies in New York, claiming they are misallocating funds by targeting vulnerable Democratic incumbents. He expressed confidence in the reelection of Representatives Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen, while linking GOP financial mismanagement to broader issues within Trump's political team.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stated on Thursday that Republicans are misallocating funds by targeting two House seats held by vulnerable Democrats in New York.

“Republicans are spending money in various locations across the country, including Long Island, in an effort to defeat Democratic incumbents while leaving Republican-held seats increasingly vulnerable, particularly in northern New York,” Jeffries said during a press conference.

Jeffries expressed confidence that Democrats will ensure the reelection of Representatives Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Laura Gillen (D-NY), despite significant GOP spending against them. He noted that the trends in both districts favor Democrats and mentioned that the seat of retiring Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is “on the verge of being flipped.”

Jeffries linked the GOP’s alleged mismanagement of campaign funds to reports that President Donald Trump’s top political advisers, Chris LaCivita and James Blair, are also advising a pro-Russian state government in the Balkans.

“The mismanagement we are witnessing on the other side of the aisle, particularly concerning MAGA Inc., should not be surprising given that Donald Trump’s top political operatives appear more focused on personal enrichment based on recent revelations and campaigning in Eastern Europe, rather than fulfilling their responsibilities to prevent significant Democratic victories on Nov. 3,” Jeffries said.

Currently, Democratic super PACs are not spending in Gillen’s or Suozzi’s districts, indicating their belief that the incumbents are well-positioned to win in November. Trump won Suozzi’s district by 4 points over former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, while Gillen’s district voted for Harris by a narrow margin of 1 percentage point.

GOP super PACs and the National Republican Congressional Committee have reportedly spent nearly $2 million on Gillen’s seat, according to AdImpact.

Both Suozzi’s and Gillen’s districts are located in Nassau County, which has shifted towards Republicans during the Trump administration. Republicans are optimistic that New York GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman, who is the Nassau County executive, can achieve a significant total in the area that would help oust Suozzi and Gillen.

“For too long, New York families have been neglected by corrupt, partisan figures Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen,” NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole stated. “Instead of advocating for Long Islanders, Suozzi and Gillen have prioritized tax increases, placed illegal immigrants ahead of their constituents, and aligned themselves with radical Kathy Hochul, who is undermining New York. Suozzi and Gillen have demonstrated to voters that they are not true representatives; they are sell-outs, and Long Islanders have had enough.”

While Republicans continue to invest in New York’s 3rd and 4th congressional districts, Stefanik’s seat has become increasingly competitive, with nonpartisan analysts shifting it in favor of Democrats.

On Thursday, Jeffries also criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for suggesting during a Fox interview that he might step down if Republicans lose their majority.

“The American people are about to retire Mike Johnson and the Republican majority in the House and possibly even in the Senate,” Jeffries remarked in response to Johnson’s comments.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Congressional Leadership Fund and the National Republican Congressional Committee for comments.
