The shooting took place around 4:00 p.m. local time; the victim is conscious and in treatment at an area hospital, according to the New York Police Department. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mayor Mamdani described the incident as a serious situation and stated that he intends to contact President Donald Trump to demand that ICE leave New York City. He expressed concern over the actions of ICE agents in the community.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since Trump returned to office, federal agents have shot at least 21 people as part of the administration’s immigration enforcement actions, resulting in six fatalities. Most of these incidents involved officers firing at individuals inside vehicles.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Department of Homeland Security confirmed their involvement in the shooting in a <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2108354031974281447">social media post</a> Thursday night, stating that the victim was a gang member with a criminal record and attributing blame to “sanctuary politicians” for the incident.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The department's post claimed, “When dangerous illegal aliens are released back onto the streets by radical sanctuary politicians, our officers are forced to make arrests at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two days prior to the shooting, ICE agents were reportedly instructed to increase daily arrests by 1,000 individuals nationwide, according to CNN.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By Thursday evening, a crowd of protesters had gathered at the scene, as reported by local outlet <a href="https://www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/08/federal-officers-shoot-man-in-the-bronx-nypd-says/">the <em>City Reporter</em></a>. The man’s vehicle remained damaged at the location.</p>
